Jerome M. Stewart, AKC, AHBA Herding Test & Trial Judge

Jerry has been involved in the sport of herding since 1986 after he acquired his first Shetland Sheepdog, WTCH Stewart's Easy Storm, UD, HX, PC, HC, HTD-III. He has been teaching all-breed herding classes since 1988, up to 3days per week in Southern California. In addition to judging herding trials he also has done herding clinics throughout the United States, and has given numerous lectures on the sport of herding. He has organized and put on demonstrations so the general public can experience herding dogs in action.

Jerry has been successful at the advanced level in AKC, AHBA, ASCA and ISDS trials with his Shetland Sheepdog, Easy and his Border Collies, Tess ,Choice and Pic. He has earned the WTCH title with three different breeds of dogs, Shetland Sheepdog, Pembroke Welsh Corgi, and Border Collie. being the first trainer to get the WTCH with an AKC registered dog and also holds the distinction of being the trainer of the first AKC herding dog to have the UD, and HX titles. He has also earned three herding championships on a mixed bred dog.

He and his students have earned forty-two herding championships , and several have become licensed herding judges. Jerry is an AKC and AHBA judge, licensed to judge all breeds in the trial and test classes, as if that isn't enough he has also held three AHBA herding trials and several instinct test at the Long Beach location where he trained for 36 years before moving to the Moreno Valley location.

Jerry's articles on the sport of herding have appeared in several publications including the Sheltie Pacesetter, Working Border Collie Magazine, Sheltie International, AHBA Newsletter, SDCSDC Newsletter, Wag-N-Tales, OCOC Barker, Pet Trader, The Herdsman and Sheltie Show Off. Since 1990 he has written a monthly Newsletter for his students. The Class Newsletter has quite a reputation and can be read by clicking this from the table of contents on the home page. Jerry has been nominated for a Maxwell Award for Photography from the Dog Writers' Association of America. Jerry and his dogs have been the subject of many published articles, including a feature on the front page of the Long Beach Register, Orange County Register's (Metro section), LA Times, Riverside Press Enterprise and others.

Jerry and Easy were featured on the cable television program Paw Prints (linked to below left) and most recently 3 episodes of with Cesar Milam (2 are linked to below right). Choice and Jerry also had their first acting parts in Animal Plant's Ella and Me episode 102, " Lead a Dog To Water." He and his classmates have been covered by CNN and OCN. He has consulted with The Amazing Race,, Big Brother
and Tough As Nails. reality programs on the use of his sheep.

He has handled Border Collies, Rough Collies, Briards, Pembroke Welsh Corgis, Australian Shepherds, English Shepherd, Bearded Collies, Samoyeds, Australian Cattle Dogs, German Shepherd Dogs, Belgian Tervuren, Bouvier des Flandres, Standard Poodle, Cataholla, Finnish Lapphund and Lhasa Apsos at herding events on a professional basis.
