The benefits of a backup dog..
To say they are special is a gross understatement. Their contribution to
the human condition, the stock and their fellow canines lasts long after
they have gone.
These are the dogs that have made my 36 years of herding training
experiences possible in LA, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Diego and
Orange County.
They give a new dog the confidence to show us what they have by making
it look fun. They go in and protect dogs that do not know how to handle
a charging sheep. They get tethered to a dog who tells us "I am not
going to" which then explains to that dog you do not have that choice.
They have the ability to show the other dog "this is what the human is
asking of you."
They have been and are an invaluable extra special resource in
the art form of starting a beginning dog. It
should be needless to say that they are very much loved and very
much missed !
